Games Stories

 Games Stories

So, my thoughts on this weeks reading about "Game Stories".  first off Id like to comment on the part where in the "Game Maker's Toolkit's" video where he talks about how games allow you to have multiple choice's in the game to shape the story. I really did agree with that was said. Especially with the example he gave about the walking dead. The game gives the perception that you the player are making "Story shaping choices" when in reality your just picking which player from two dies or even just a worthless piece of dialog. You are still going to end up with the same ending either way.

A more recent game that did this but in a different way was that of Cyberpunk 2077. The game was all big about marketing its three different life or story paths as they call them. The game would have the player choose from the paths of "Nomad" "StreetKid" or "Corpo". In my opinion from playing the game all these really did was set up the prologue in a different way. You didnt miss anything from the Nomad option of you decided to play a StreetKid.

I under stand how ever why game companies cant exactly just make three completely different stories, this takes time. As was said in the "Game Makers Toolkits" video when a publisher was asked why they dont do multiple stories, they said "Whats the point in putting all the work into content the player might not ever see". Its very hard to disagree with this statement I have to agree. Unless you have the resources and time to have a development team work on a whole other complex side story that might never be seen. whats the point. Its better to focus development on a really good story with subtle choices so the player "Thinks" they are making a difference.

Now its not fair to label every game that does this sort of thing lazy or what not. like for example, near the end of Grand Theft Auto 5 the player is given the option two kill either Miclael, Trevor or  "Deathwish". If the player chooses to kill say Michael or Trevor they wont be able to play as them any more, well because they are dead.

So game's can have cool stuff like this in them, and I think its enough to keep the player engaged.

  1. I felt the same reading the readings and watching the video, the walking dead gives off an idea that your choices really change the story and I believed it all this time but looking back yeah there's literally nothing different in the choices you make, maybe the ending ending will be different depending on things but by the time the next chapter roles around your back on square one with everyone else save a few characters here and there.

  2. hey aaron , i also like what is said in the video about us players having control over shaping the story we play , even though we could possibly end up at the same finish point if we had gone a different route . Cyberpunk is a good example as u mentioned, i never played it since it got such bad reviews but i might some day . I feel as tho companies make it this way so that no matter what choice you make , your not left with deciding whether or not u made the right choice with your decision as ultimately you are ending up at the same ending point
