 Week 3 - Reading Task

This weeks reading task goes into detail about how you should go about reading through a document and how to effectively take information from said document. When reading, I personally find my self just "Reading" for the sake of getting from the top to the bottom of the document without actually acknowledging any of the information I am reading. So there is a "Method" that is used to help with this and it goes as follows,

On your first read through, you are just getting to grips with the piece. Taking in the title, introduction, headings, table of contents etc. As-well as reading the conclusion. This can help you to notice the concluded piece when you actually read the piece. So after reading through for the first time you should be able to describe the main contribution to the field & decide if you are going to use the source and read through it again.

With your second read, You are going to use the information you have gathered with your first read through to help you gather information and engage with the piece. You will be able to pay close attention to any diagrams or figures that could help you get a better understanding or even back up your finial conclusion. The main goal with the 2nd reading is to allow you to get a great grasp of the piece, summarize the main findings. After this read, you will be able to decide if you have enough to make your finial conclusion. If not there is no harm in doing a finial read through to get everything perfect

And finally with a third reading, you should have all material to make your finial conclusion along with any facts or figures needed to support your claim. You should be able to now identify any strengths or weaknesses of the ideas, identify any missing citations to relevant work and identify inherent assumptions.

After completing a read three times you will get used to how to effectively pull information out of a text. It may not always need three reads. More commonly you will just need to first understand the conclusion, understand the text then read through again to pull out any valid information as-well as facts to back up said facts.
