 Game Idea Research

So evolving my game idea a bit more I have decided to go with the flappy bird idea but with a bit of a twist. I would like to still keep the concept of the flappy bird thing, but there is also another game quite similar called "Geometry Dash" that I feel would bring some cool challenges to the table.

Game Mechanics.

1. For one of the first game mechanics I am thinking that the game is more than likely going to be a 2D side scroller with 3d graphical elements. The player will have the controls of jumping either by clicking space bar or by clicking with their mouse that's completely up to them to decide what works best for them. The game will be constantly moving to the right and the player can not control that. So in theory the game is a timed input based game. Both Geometry dash and flappybird share these same elements.

2. The game will have a set course for the player to follow with a finish line at the end if they complete it successfully. The player can fail and be reset to the start if they hit into any of the obstacles set out along the course. These obstacles will be completely random with no pattern, so the player cant just get a rhythm going and hold jump to land between each one and complete the level. Instead they will be set so you really have to be careful for them as you go along. Some might be say above the player so they might have to be careful that when jumping off the ledge they don't hit it, instead they might just have to roll off the ledge in order to not fail.

3. For my third game mechanic I would like the game to have some sort of User interface, a main menu of sorts. When the player loads up the game they can choose what levels they want to play or see if they have completed a certain level. I might add two modes to the game, one being the "career" if you will. Where you have to successfully complete a level to unlock the next. And the other being a "free mode" where the player can just practice any level they want but it will not count to the completion of career levels. Another purpose of this User Interface, is that it will allow they player to choose from a few different "Player Models" to make their experience a bit more interesting.

I have included a link to try out Geometry Dash for your self so you can get a bit of an understanding of what the game is like https://geometrydash.io/

  1. Hey Aaron as I was looking through this game idea and I think its quite interesting, it's going to be hard to compete with a massive name that will go down in history for side scroller, a cool part that I liked about your own take on the side scroller is the randomizer for the different obstacles so that the player will find it hard to build up muscle memory. I wonder how you could make this game stand out compared to the competition other than the randomized obstacles what would make this game its own game. How would you make it interesting and have players coming back again and again? How could you improve on the mistakes or bad elements of the other side scrollers? What if you made a new way of getting through levels, like the way geometry dash would have the gravity ball, the rocket ship, the UFO, and in new releases the spider, you could make your own mechanics for getting through levels. You could make the side scroller more than just completing levels and maybe do an endless runner or even a racing mode where you gain speed by having a perfect score.

  2. Hi Aaron really interesting blog n your game idea research and on the flappy bird idea concept. I really enjoyed the game mechanics and on how you plan to implement both 2d and 3d game concepts into your game. I really like that their is a set goal in place with a beginning and a finish line in place for this as well.

  3. hello again Aaron , really interesting game idea. Flappy bird and geometry dash where both amazing games back in the day , where both very addicting. The part about the side scroller was very good and I'm curious o see how you'll implement it , its defiantly something different compared to what most people would do , and a i think a game like geometry dash would be a prefect match. I wonder what it be a good idea to have some sort of checkpoint system in you game in stead of resting back to the very start , as sometimes this can be annoying. What if , as i remember you saying its a rhythm game with music , you can unlock more and more music as you progress , you could ad this into the menu part you where talking about in part of this blog , maybe something like once you fully complete a level you get a new song and a new level to go along with it and as the further you progress the faster the song gets so it makes it harder as you go along. Just an idea tho, great blog so far on your game . Looking forward to seeing your finale game soon

  4. Your idea is coming along really well my guy! I'm liking the idea that you will have randomised obstacles in the levels that players have to dodge, it stops the game from being a giant memory game and rewards quick thinking and instincts! It also separates you from the competition such as Geometry Dash, Flappy Bird and Mario Jump for example, even with all these auto scrolling 2D obstacle course clear games I wonder, even though you already have enough idea's here what else could you do to separate yourself from the competition? Maybe you could incorporate some power-ups? I don't have as many idea's as others but think of it as a 2D Temple Run or Jetpack Joyride power-up, for example- one boosts you a portion through the level, one makes you phase through obstacles temporarily, if there is a form of tokens or currency in your game one could magnetise them to the player? I cannot wait to see how this game shapes up!
