My Game Concept Idea: Game 1

For my game idea which was my idea 1, I still have yet to decide on a name. The game will be a combination of the game play elements from Flappy bird and Geometry dash.

Introduction

The game I hope to produce will be as I said above a mix of the game elements from the very popular games "Flappy bird" and "Geometry Dash". These are were both very addictive games which really pushed its players to try and beat their high scores. They both follow quite simple and easy to view color/ art styles. which is both good for the user and the computing power required to process the game.

The game play mechanics of the game will include, a fixed moving speed(Side scroller of sorts) jumping, obstacle avoiding, a main menus, levels, character selection and a progress bar.

The game I am hoping to produce has been inspired by some of the following:

  • Geometry Dash: This game was a massive hit back in 2013, it was something new and refreshing for players with lots of really cool game play aspects that made it quite unique such as levels, music, and unlock able skins just to name a few. The Game is available to play on all mobile devices and Pc's via steam. Link

  • Flappy bird: Flappy bird was my "Original" game idea for  a basis of a game. Flappy bird is basically a side scroll-er that is at a fixed speed that can not be controlled by the player. The player must keep tapping the screen or clicking to keep the bird in the air, naturally the bird will be falling downwards if the player doesn't click. So for example the player might keep tapping the screen in rhythm to keep the bird at a steady height until an obstacle comes up and its up to the player to decide so say keep tapping to get to the clearing at the top or to fall down a bit as they are to high up. The obstacles in this game are a bit different to those of Geometry dash however. In this game they are pipes that run from the top to the bottom of the screen. There will be openings randomly along the pipe that the player must go through. If they hit the pipe or the floor they will fail the game. Link

 Game Genre

The Genre of the game is going to be a Side scroller / rhythm game. The game will be quite similar to the games I was inspired by, but I feel the likes of power ups and random events is whats going to really make it different from anything else out at the moment. The fact that players can learn the levels is still there but the added features just make it that bit more challenging

 Game play

The player of the game will take control of a square object, the player must successfully make it to the finish line in a series of levels. The player will not have control over the movement of the object as that is that makes the game a challenge. The game will have a fixed speed in which the player will be moving from "to the right". The player will have to jump over a series of obstacles such as squares and triangles. If the player collides with one of these obstacles they will fail the level and be put back to the start. For the likes of the Triangles, the player can also fail if they land on them as they are pointy, the player can land on top of squares no problem and glide right over them, but for triangles they will have to jump over them in order to progress. I would like to also include some sort of  "Random Event" to the game, so that it cant just be 100% memorized. This is just to spice things up a little bit. I would like to have say some sort of enemy or character shooting moving spikes or some sort of obstacle at the player that will also fail them if they are hit.

Another game aspect I would like to include is, within the level design I would like to include "Hidden" paths that the player can find power ups to say give them 1/2 movement speed for 15seconds. This will just take the game back a notch for a few seconds. This will enable the player to really learn the levels as these power ups can really help them to completing it.

The game will also feature a UI system upon launching the game. The player will be greeted with a Levels button as-well as a characters button. When the player clicks on the levels button it will open a new menus that will display all levels of the game. The characters menu will have interchangeable skins for the player model that the player unlocks via completing the levels of the game.

Key Features

  • Side scroller/rhythm game: Complete a level to unlock a character model.
  • Jumping: The main control of the game is for the player to jump. They will need to use this in order to not fail a level by hitting an obstacle.
  • Power ups: The player will be able to find hidden power ups throughout levels to grant them 1/2 movement speed to make the game play a bit easier.
  • Menus: The menus of the game will allow for the player to choose certain levels as well as to change out their character model.

Resources Required

In making this game its going to take a few resources, such as player models, background textures, obstacles and the UI/Menus. Thankfully through learning with the Unity tutorials I am learning some of the skills required to put together a game like this. I noticed that there is tutorials on how to even make a UI which is a big part of my game and something I'm definitely going to have to look into.
