Game Design Document
Game Design Document
So for this week, week 6 I got to learn about a "Game Design Document" other wise called a "GDD". This is something I suppose could of guessed would of existed, especially with bigger companies for developing a triple game with thousands of devs working, but I never really gave it much thought before hand.
Seems to me that a GDD is basically just a massive log book for devs to keep all their research for the game stored in one place. These GDD's are very formatted so that when you go back to look for something you can say, look in the "player" section if its to do with say player movement or something, just giving an example. These GDD's however arent just to keep track of say, "player movement" as a feature. They are a log of EVERYTHING. like I mean literally everything down to the T.
A GDD for my game would be a little less in content compered to something like a triple A game like, Grand Theft Auto 5 for example, but that being said its still going to have a fair bit of content inside it.
- Name
- Premise
- Overview
- Obstacles
- Power ups
- Goal & Victory Conditions
- Art style
- Audio/Music
- Maps
- UI/Menus
- Target Platforms/distribution
- Unique aspects
- Further considerations
- Similar existing ideas
These are pretty much the main categories that would be inside a GDD for my game. Its a complete breakdown off all the aspects of the game. It just makes it easier to find exactly what you are looking for and makes it nice and organized for keeping track of information.
The content that will be going inside categories like this would be quite a lot. Thats not just for the sake of it however, its to give a complete breakdown of everything got to do with that category. For example the Ui/Menus category. This would have a complete breakdown with all info about the Ui/Menus for the game. Showing how they work and how they are affecting the game.
Here is a link to my current GDD, it will be a work in progress https://www.dundoc.com/project/7874
